أراد المؤلفان دراسة النقد باعتباره نوعاً أدبياً له قوانينه الخاصة وكذلك دراسة المؤلفات النقدية التي يمكن أن تكشف نهجاً صريحاً أو ضمنياً. من هنا يستخلص الكاتبان نتائج منها:
1-دراسة كل من النقاد المرموقين في كتاباتهم النظرية، ومحاولة مقابلة النظرية بالتطبيق قدر المستطاع.
2-تجاوز المعضلة المغلقة: هل على الناقد، عند شرحه أثراً أدبياً والحكم عليه، أن يبحث عن مقاييس موضوعية في عقيدة أو في علم؟ أو ينبغي، على عكس ذلك، أن يبقى محصوراً في ذاتيته وبالتالي تنعدم إمكانية الوصول إلى تعيين حقيقي؟
3-التطرق إلى ما يسميه كبير نقاد فرنسا ألبير تيبوديه "نقد الحركة"، والذي نجم عنه نشوء نقد رومانسي ونقد رمزي ونقد طبيعي... كذلك النقد الذي يعتمد على "إعادة اكتشاف الأثر"، والنقد الصحفي المحض الذي يهتم بالأخبار الأدبية كاهتمام بالأخبار السياسية أو الاقتصادية.
إن موضوع النقد الأدبي لهو شائك فعلاً، ونأمل من خلال هذه الدراسة المختصرة التوصل إلى فكرة واضحة عنه وعن الاتجاهات المختلفة التي بلورته وأعطته صفته كفن مميز عن غيره من الفنون الأدبية. ولقد تناوله الكاتبان ابتداء من القرن التاسع عشر، آخذين بعين الاعتبار كون النقد الأدبي لم ينشأ كنوع أدبي إلا في مطلع هذا القرن.
