الكتاب جولة في الغناء العربي منذ الأربعينيات من القرن الماضي حتى اليوم مع الوقوف عند أبرز المغنين العرب الذين اشتهروا في هذه الحقبة الممتدة من الزمن. والكتاب في جزأين وهو يرتب المغنين ترتيباً ألفبائياً، وليس بحسب أي ترتيب، آخر، فهو لا يرتبهم بحسب الشهرة، ولا بحسب العمر، ولا بحسب الوفاة، ولا بأي معيار آخر. ثم هو يختا لكل مغن بضع أغنيات اشتهر بها، أو راجت واستساغها الجمهور العربي استساغة أكثر من غيرها. من ثم اعتنى بإثبات ترجمات لبعض الفنانين معتمداً الإيجاز والاختصار في الترجمات، كما اعتمد في اختيار المغنين والأغاني على حد سواء.
