من اغتيال أبو سعد-ذلك القروي المتمسك بضيعته، الرائد بنشاطه وكفاحه في الحياة-برصاصة قناص في "تراب ضيعتي"، إلى استشهاد الحرية والعلم والعدالة بشخص بهية في "راعية البقر" تتولى لحظات وأحداث من الحياة بعامة والحياة اللبنانية بخاصة والحياة الريفية بشكل أخصّ، لم يسع المؤلف إلى تخيل أشخاص غير عاديين، ولم يعمد إلى تصور أحداث غير عادية، بل رمى إلى تصوير أناس يمكن أن نلتقيهم دائماً وأحداث ومواقف يتفاعل بها ومعها هؤلاء الناس في ترك الحياة، فأبو أسعد يعاني من الغلاء ومن الحنين إلى الجبل. وإبراهيم وكمال في "الصبحية عند الجار" يفكر صفو جيرتهما كلي ودجاجة، وحبوبه في "مشوار" تعود إلى بيت أهلها بعد زواج فاشل غير مدروس. وفي "خزانة جدتي" وهدية الميلاد و"سبت لعازر" وبسّبّي بربارة" يصور أجواء الأعياد القروية بأسلوب تمتزج فيه الحسرة بالحنين: حسرة على فردوس القرية المفقود وحنين إلى بساطة الماضي وبراءته". غاص أديبنا على ماضي التقاليد والإرث ولامس الحاضر بأحداثه متوسلاً التصوير حيناً والتقرير أحيانا ابتعد عن الحذلقة والصناعة ولم يتحرج عن الألفاظ والتعابير العامية تساوقاً مع مستوى أشخاصه.
