يتجه نقد النقد الأدبي نحو النصوص النقدية النظرية لقراءة المصطلح، والمنهج، والمفهوم، والإجراء النقدي، إضافة إلى مساءلة النظريات الفكرية المؤسسة، ومدى قدرة النقد الأدبي على قراءة النصوص الأدبية، وما هو مختلف الذي يقدمه كل إتجاه نقدي عن سواه، وما هي مرتكزاته، وأسسه، وما يتميز به عن سواه.
وقد شغل النقد السيميائي جزءاً ملفتاً من مساحة النقد العربي الحديث بصفته أحد الإتجاهات التي حاولت أن تكشف عن خصائص الأجناس الأدبية المختلفة، وكونه أحد الروافد الرئيسة لحركة النقد.
واهتم النقد السيميائي في عدد من مدوناته بالرواية وشواغلها الفنية، حيث حاول أن يوازن الخطى بين التوجه إلى علامات النص، وما تحيل إليه تلك العلامات مما يقع في دوائر خارج النص، وذلك بعد تناحرات طويلة بين النقاد؛ إذ حاول بعضهم شدّ النقد إلى النص، أو المؤلف، أو المتلقي، أو ما حول النص.
وبناء على ما سبق فقد وجدت الدراسة أنها يمكن أن تنشغل بهذا الجزء من النقد الأدبي العربي الذي اهتم بجنس أدبي محدد (الرواية)، راح يشغل في العقود الأخيرة معظم جهود النقاد بفضل قدرته على التعبير عن هواجس الأفراد والمجتمعات وتطوراتها، وما يدور فيها من حراك، وسوى ذلك.
وقد توخت الدراسة تحقيق مجموعة من الأهداف أبرزها: "التعرف إلى العوامل المختلفة التي تتشارك في تشكيل الفكر النقدي العربي الحديث"، "التعرف إلى الأرضية الفلسفية والفكرية للنقد السيميائي"، "إستكشاف مساحة اشتغال النقد السيميائي في خارطة النقد العربي الحديث عامة والروائي خاصة"، "البحث في المناطق الفكرية التي تتقاطع مع النقد السيميائي"، "تحديد المفاهيم والإجراءات النظرية التي تشكل جوهر النقد السيميائي"، "قراءة النقد العربي السيميائي للرواية قراءة تكشف عن إتجاهاته ومكوناته ومصطلحاته وإجراءاته"، "تحليل بعض النماذج العربية التي سعت لصياغة نقد يوظف السيميائية في القراءة النقدية"، "التعرف إلى خصوصية النقد السيميائي في قراءة الرواية العربية بالموازنة مع الإتجاهات الأخرى".
