يعود التفكير السيميائي إلى عصور سحيقة جدا ، تصل إلى ألفى عام تقريبا ، إلى أيام الرواقيين ، بوصفهم أول من كشفوا عن وجهى العلامة( الدالة والمدولو) ، فقد تنبهوا إلى أن الاختلاف بين أصوات اللغة، إنما هو- فى حقيقته - اختلاف شكلي ظاهري لمعان أو مرجعيات متشابهة فى الجوهر. انتقل التفكير السيميائي - فى القرن الرابع والخامس - خطوة أخرى مع القديس أوغطيس بسؤاله عن التأويل والتفسير فى إطار المشكلة التى طرحتها المسيحية الصاعدة فى مواجهة الكتابات المقدسة. وفى القرن السابع عشر ، يمكننا القول إن مرحلة "جون لوك " تعد المرحلة الحقيقية فى تمييز السيمياء عن غيرها من العلوم ، التى كانت تحضنها وتختلط معها فى أغلب الأحوال . وهكذا توالت أبحاث القرون اللاحقة فى الإشارة أو الدراسة للسيمياء كما فى أعمال فيكوولاينتز فى القرن الثامن عشر ، وأعمال كوندياك فى القرن التاسع عشر الذى كتب فصولا مهمة عن النظرية السيميائية.
