ترجع أهمية دراسة اللغة العبرية بالنسبة للدرس العربي لغوياً وأدبياً، إلى كون اللغة العربية واللغة العبرية كليهما، فرعين هامين من فروع دوحة اللغات السامية العريقة، كالآرامية والحبشية والبابلية الآشورية وغيرها من لغات الشعوب التي انحدرت من نسل سام بن نوح عليهما السلام، ولما كانت العبرية تتشابه مع اللغة العربية عنى "محمود حسن المرغي" بوضع هذه الدراسة التي يكشف فيها عن مفردات هذه اللغة وتراكيبها وما بينها ومعانيها، وقواعدها. وما أعان المؤلف على معرفة ذلك التماثل والنظر مقارنة بين اللغتين، هو ذلك السجل القديم المكتوب باللغة العربية، المعروف بالتوراة أو العهد القديم في صورته الأشمل.
