أدرك علماء الساميات أهمية تناول اللغات السامية بالدرس المقارن لغة وأدبًا, ولعل اللغة العبرية من أكثر أخواتها الساميات تشابهًا مع العربية في نحوها وصرفها وأدبها, مفردات وتراكيب, ومما أعان على معرفة ذلك التماثل, والنظر مقارنة بين اللغتين, هو ذلك السجل القديم المكتوب باللغة العبرية, المعروف بالتوراة أو "العهد القديم" في صورته الأشمل, إذ "التوراة" هي الشريعة الموسوية, وهي تكون الجزء الأول من كتاب "العهد القديم", يليها أسفار الأنبياء, ثم الجزء الثالث والأخير وهو أسفار المكتوبات.
وتعتبر نصوص "العهد القديم" محور الدراسات المقارنة لغويًا وأدبيًا, لأنها تقدم لنا في غالبيتها, اللغة العبرية في شكلها (الكلاسيكي) النقي, قبل أن تختلط في عصورها المتأخرة بكثير من ألفاظ لغات أجنبية أخرى غريبة عنها, بل غريبة عن العائلة السامية أحيانًا, كما حدث في اللغة العبرية الحديثة على وجه الخصوص.
