بعلم البديع يكتمل مثلث علوم البلاغة في المعاني والبديع، وهي علوم تتحرى مواطن الصحة والحسن في كلام العرب وشره ونثره، من حيث المعاني والألفاظ في علاقاتها ومواقعها من الكلام، لذا كان لزاماً على دارس اللغة العربية وآدابها أن يصيب قدراً من معرفة هذه العلوم، يكون له عوناً على أداء ما يرتجى منه في ميدانه الذي اختاره. ولما كان علم البديع منوطاً به إظهار ما في كلام العرب من جمال وحسن فإن علماءه الذين قصدوا لتقنينه ابتداء من ابن المعتز وقدامة قد استبانوا منه ما ينيف على المائة نوع، استظهروها من كلام العرب منظومة ومنثورة، قديمة وحديثة الذي عاصروه وعالجوه، وكان القرآن الكريم والحديث الشريف خير مثل وأسمى مثال لهم في درسهم البويعي.
لما كانت أنواع البديع التي قننها علماؤه ووضعوا لكل منها مصطلحه وشرطه مما يصعب على الطالب أن يلم بها جميعاً، فقد اعتنى المؤلف "محمود المراغي" بوضع كتابه الذي نقلب صفحاته والمعنون "بعلم البديع"، وقد اقتصر منه على قرض أهم أنواع هذا العلم في غير إيجاز ممل، لا إسهاب ممل، مقدماً له بتعريف علم البديع ورواده وهم علمائه، ومشيراً إلى مواضع بعض أنواعه في كلام العرب القدماء والمحدثين بالنسبة لهؤلاء الرواد، وحتى يتيح المؤلف للطالب أن يتصل بتراثه، فقد عني بتذيل ما تم تقديمه من أنواع البديع، ببعض صفحات كتاب عالم من علماء البلاغة. وإن لم يكن من روادها-وهو الخطيب القزويني في كتابه الموسوم بـ"الإيضاح في علوم البلاغة".
