في أواخر 2003 كان الأفق مسدوداً وياسر عرفات محاصراً، ذهبت إلى خالد مشغل رئيس المكتب السياسي للحركة طالباً منه أن يروي قصة حماس، وهو أحد مؤسسيها، وقصته فيها، وكان الغرض تسليط الضوء على حركة التفت العالم بأسره إليها لاحقاً يوم فازت في الانتخابات التشريعية الفلسطينية وشكلت حكومة "تعايش" صعب مع الرئيس محمود عباس.
يرسم هذا الحوار الطويل الذي أجري في دمشق صورة لنشأة الحركة والنضالات التي خاضتها، كما يرسم صورة للمتحدث الذي لعب دوراً بارزاً فيها على رغم حرصه الدائم على إسناد أي نجاح إلى المجموعة لا إلى القائد من قادتها.
