يسطر شفيق الحوت على صفحات هذا الكتاب مذكراته، وهي أحاديث له كانت قد نشرت على شكل حلقات متتالية، وتحت العنوان نفسه، في جريدة الشرق الأوسط". ثلث الأحاديث حملت تفاصيل تجربته في منظمة التحرير، ومع نهاية شهر أيار/مايو 1984 حيث يكون قد مضى عشرون عاماً على اليوم التاريخي الذي تمّ فيه إعلان تأسيس وقيام منظمة التحرير الفلسطينية، قرر وبدأ شفيق الحوت بتسجيل تجربته في منظمة التحرير، مستسلماً لعدد من الحوافز لم يعد في استطاعته مقاومتها.
من هذه الحوافز أولاً: الاقتناع التام بأنه بعد نضال عشرين عاماً في الحركة الوطنية الفلسطينية، لم يعد لديه ما يقدمه سوى هذه التجربة الذاتية، الغنية بالعبر والدروس، تمهيداً لفسح المجال لجيل جديد من أبناء فلسطين وأخوتهم على امتداد الوطن الكبير، ليحملوا المشعل وليتحملوا المسؤولية، ثانياً: الإحساس الغامر الذي سيطر على الكثيرين ممن عاشوا التجارب الصعبة والمريرة في لبنان، وبخاصة تلك الغزوة الصهيونية الهمجية سنة 1982، وما ترتب عليها من آثار وعواقب، ثالثاً: الطموح إلى كتابة "التاريخ" على غير المألوف في كتابته، أي كتابته وهو لا يزال "ساخناً" وأحداثه متلاحقة ومتشابكة، وفصوله لم تنته بعد، وكتابته بـ"عاطفة" المشارك في صناعته وفي تلقي نتائجه. وموضوعية هذا النوع من الكتابة لا تنبع من "الصدق" في رواية الحدث فحسب، وإنما كذلك من "موقف الذات، عقلياً وشعورياً" من هذا الحدث. رابعاً: اعتقاد صاحب المذكرات الجازم أن الاجتياح الصهيوني للبنان، ورحيل المقاومة الفلسطينية عن هذه الساحة، وركوبها البحر إلى مناف أو قواعد جديدة، لا فرق، وضعت حداً فارقاً لمرحلة من مراحل النضال الفلسطيني، وفرضت منعطفاً على مسارها لم يتبلور في حينه. لذا فإن هذا المسار الجديد تطلب من شفيق الحوت وقفة مع الذات، ليراجع من خلالها، بموقف نقد ذاتي، تجربته، وهو يعلن بعد هذه الوقفة مع الذات تجربته بصراحة وأمانة وذلك بهدف تدمير مغبة التعثر على الأجيال المقبلة، بما وقع فيه السابقون من أخطاء أو سوء في التقدير.
