منذ أن أبرمت إمارة أبو ظبي أول اتفاقية امتياز نفطية عام 1939، اكتسبت خبرة كبيرة فيما يتصل بتطوير مصادرها الطبيعية، وعلاقاتها بشركات النفط الأجنبية. ومن بين الإمارات السبع، التي تشكل اتحاد دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة الذي تأسس عام 1971، تملك إمارة أبو ظبي أكبر أحتياطيات من النفط والغاز، وهي المنتج الرئيسي لهما.
لا يوجد في دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة سياسة بترولية اتحادية موحدة، أو أي تشريع اتحادي خاص بالبترول يحكم منح رخص الاستكشاف والتطوير. وتبعاً لذلك، تصرف كل إمارة، على نحو مستقل، الشؤون البترولية الخاصة بها. وبما أن أبو ظبي أكثر الإمارات إنتاجاً للنفط، وتوجد فيها معظم احتياطيات النفط المهمة، ولديها أكثر التجارب ثراء في صناعة النفط، وأطول تاريخ من العلاقات بشركات النفط الأجنبية، فهي الخيار الأمثل لأن تكون موضع تركيز أي دراسة تتناول تطور المصادر البترولية في دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة.
