لقدْ جَعَلْتَ أيُّها الشَّيخ الجليل الحياةَ شاقَّةً عَلّيَّ، ولقدْ كَلَّفْتَ مَنْ عَرَفَكَ معرفتي بك، مِنْ أَمْره شَططاً، وكنْتَ المَثَل الأَعْلَى إباءً وشُمُوخاً وأنَفَةً ومُرُوءَةً، فما كنْتَ، أيُّها الأستاذ الجليل، غادراً، ولَمْ تَسْتَبْدِل الَّذي هو أَدْنَى بالَّذي هو خَيْر، وأعْجَب لكَ كَيْفَ احْتَمَلْتَ طُولَ الطريق، وبُعْد المسافة، نَقِيَّاً، حِينَ رَدَغَ في الوَحْل الطَّغام، وشامِخاً، حِينَ رَتَعَ باسْمك الصِّغار، وكنتَ في كلّ أطوار حياتك ذا مُرُوءة، وما تَنَكَّبّتَ عنْ طريقها، وما لِنْتَ، وما خُرْتَ، وما خُنْتَ، فبالله قُل لي: كَيْفَ - بَعْدَ ذلك - نَرْقَى إلى ذُرَاك، ولَمْ تَسْتَعِدَّ، بَعْدُ، للدَّرُب الوعْر، ولَمْ نَتَهَيَّأَ للمنهج العَسِر؟!...
أَمَا بَعْدُ... فهذا كتابُ أَوْدَعْتُه صَوْبَ عَقْلي وثَمَرة إجتهادي، وأَنَفَقْتُ في صَوْغه وتأليفه أجْمَل سنوات العُمْر، وكان رجائي أن أتعَلَّمَ وأفهم، وأن أجْلُوَ شيئاً من حياة عبد الله عبد الجبَّار ونقده، ما وَسِعَنِي الحَوْلُ والجُهْد، واخْتَرْتُ "العَيْش في الكِتَابة"، عنواناً له، قاصِداً به بَعْض ما عناه أدورنو، حِينَ جَعَلَ الكتابة وَطَناً يَعِيش فيه الغريب والمَنْفِيّ، ولقدْ عَاشَ عبد الجبَّار زَهُرة العُمْر نانياً عنْ وطنه، فعاشَ في الكتابة واتَّخَذَها وَطَناً.
