"وإنما يعرف الشعر من دفع إلى مضايقه" بهذا القول للصاحب بن عباد يبتدئ "حسين محمد بافقيه" كتابه (مضايق الشعر) وهو يتقرى النظرية الشعرية عند الأديب "حمزة شحاته" ليرى كيف استوى حمزة شحاته ناقداً له شأنه في نظرية الشعر، وفيلسوفاً تدور كلماته حول الفن والجمال. عن كتابه (مضايق الشعر) يقول حسين محمد بافقيه في معرض تقديمه له: "وفي هذا الكتاب مطارح من نظرية الأدب وفلسفة الجمال، اضطرني إليهما كلامٌ لحمزة شحاته في الشعر نادر ونفيس، وحاولتُ أن أفك ما استغلق منه، وأن أكشف خبيئه، وكلام شحاته صعب أبي خفي، يصدق فيه قول شيخ المعرة: وليس على الحقائق كل قولي ولكن فيه أصناف المجاز وفي هذا السياق يوضح الكاتب أن كتابه يسعى إلى إظهار المقدرة النقدية والفلسفية لحمزة شحاته، يقول "درست في الكتاب نظرات حمزة شحاته، ووجدت فيه شيئاً عجيباً وأنا لم أقصد المقارنة. وجدت أن شحاته، لو درست مقدمته حينذاك، لعُدَتْ تلك المقدمة من الإرهاصات الجديدة في النقد العربي، إذ لا تختلف رؤيته عن رؤية الكثير من الفلاسفة الجماليين في العالم، والنقاد المحدثين. فالنقد الأدبي كان ما يزال في ذلك الوقت يئن تحت وطأة الرومانسية بتأوهاتها. فيما كان حمزة شحاته يرى أن الشاعر لا يتميز من سواه بمشاعر خاصة أو تجربة مختلفة، إنما يختلف عن غيره أنه يستطيع أن يكتب شعراً وغيره لا يستطيع. رؤية شحاته تجعل مفهوم الشعر أقرب إلى الحرفة والصنعة وليس التأوهات"، معتبراً أن هذه الرؤية "متقدمة للغاية في ذلك العصر، فمعظم نقد تلك المرحلة لم ينجو من ويلات الرومانسية، التي جعلت النقد الأدبي إلماحاً إلى ما في داخل الشاعر، في حين أن مهمة الشعر الإلماح إلى ما يشكله الفنان". في هذا الكتاب تجتمع الفلسفة والجمال والفن كقوس قزح يكشف عن وجوه متنوعة وثرية للنظرية الشعرية عند حمزة شحاته. وهو ما نجح بافقيه في تقديمه للقارئ العربي بكفاءة إبداعية رائدة في مجال النقد الأدبي.
