أصل هذا الكتاب (مقالة) من ضمن سلسلة مقالات نشرها محمد جميل العظم في مجلة الرابطة الإسلامية الصادرة في دمشق سنة (1350-1351ه). وجاءت تحت عنوان "كتاب تاريخ حياتي المسمى (التعرف للأمة تحدثاً بالنعمة)".
وكما يشير العنوان فإن الكتاب/ المقالة بمثابة (ترجمة ذاتية) تعلم المؤلف نفسه، يبدأها بنشأته "ولدت سنة 1290 تسعين ومئتين وألف، ونشأت في بيئة صالحة ألهمت فيها الرشد صبياً ..."، هذه البيئة الصالحة سوف يكون لها أكبر الأثر على حياة المؤلف وأهم عامل فيها هو ترسيخ عقيدة الإيمان بالله الواحد والسعي في البرهان على خلود النفس بالإنتقال إلى عالمها الأول، وهكذا يجادل المؤلف فلاسفة وعلماء عصره، ويجد الحجة والدليل من خلال تدبره آيات الذكر الحكيم "داعي الله وهو يدعوني إلى ما يحييني إلى الحياة الأبدية إلى دار السلام"، والمؤلف في هذا يؤكد على "وجود عالم لطيف وراء هذا العالم الكثيف" وهذا العالم لا يصل إليه إلا من سمت قواه العاقلة وحلّق في جو الفضائل من عفة وورع وابتعد عن الشهوات. إلى ذلك، يستحضر المؤلف أقوال العلماء في المادة للرد على أولئك الذين لا يؤمنون بذلك العالم اللطيف الغير المحسوس ومنها ما قاله العالم الفلكي (كاميل فلامريون) بأن حواسنا تخدعنا في كل شيء، والتحليل العلمي وحده هو الذي ينير عقولنا، فيقول: "يمكن أن يوجد حولنا أشياء بل كائنات حيّة لا ترى ولا تلمس فمن الذي كان يحلم بوجود الجراثيم قبل اكتشافها ...". وفي هذا تأكيد من المؤلف "أن الوجود غير محدود تعمل فيه قوى لا تحيط بها الظنون والأوهام، وأن المادة وجه من وجوهها لا أصل لوجودها، وقوانين المادة من مظاهر تلك القوى الكلية".
وبناءً على ما تقدم انتظمت عناوين الكتاب لتشمل: 1- نشأتي، 2- التربية التي نشأت عليها وحياتي ناشئاً، 3- شيوخي ومن انتفعت بصحبتهم من العلماء، و (ملحق) سوانحي القلم والسيف أصحابها.
