في هذا العمل يستعرض الأمير شكيب أرسلان، ما ارتسم في خاطره من ذكريات، في خلال قيامه بأداء فريضة الحج التي هي ركن من أركان الإسلام الخمسة، مفصلاً فيه مناسك الحج في الإحرام والتلبية، والإستلام والطواف، والوقوف بعرفة، والدفع إلى المزدلفة، والرمي في منى، وما يلازم هذه المناسك المباركة من الدقائق، تطهيراً للروح والجسد، حتى تمام فريضة الحجَ، التي ساوى النبي (صلى الله عليه وسلم)، بينها وبين الجهاد، واعتدها، في حديثه الشريف، من أكثر الأعمال ثواباً عند الله.
وفي هذا السياق تطرق الأمير شكيب، في خلال رحلته الحجازية، هذه، إلى كثير من الشؤون التي رآها حين ذاك، مما أضفى على هذا العمل طابعاً تميز به (آداب الرحلة)، من سهولة الأسلوب ووفرة المعلومات، وتنوع المباحث.
