لا يخفى على دارس العربية أن لفهم حروفي المعاني أدوات النحو في الجانبين النظري والتطبيقي دوراً بالغاً في إتقان هذه اللغة والتمكن من ناصيتها, فكل حرف من هذه الحروف يحمل معاني متنوعة متباينة, ويتلون بألوان ماتعة تمده بالثراء والغنى. وقد لعب هذا التنوع لمعاني كل حرف منها دوراً واضحاً في سحر هذه اللغة وبلاغتها, وجعلها تسمو وترتفع الى قمم الفصاحة والبيان. إن هذا المعجم هو ثمرة أكثر من ثلاثة عقود في الدراسة والتدريس والتأليف, وقد كان الهدف من إعداده أن يساعد الطلاب بعامة- والجامعيين بخاصة- على دراسة حروف المعاني- أدوات النحو- وقد حاول المؤلف فيه جاهداً ربط النظري بالتطبيقي, وهو أمر يجعل من النحو مادة يقبل عليها الطلاب بشغف وشوق.
