تابعي. من أشراف الكتاب. مولده ووفاته في البصرة.
نشأ بزازا، في أذنه صمم. وتفقه وروى الحديث، واشتهر بالورع وتعبير الرؤيا.
واستكتبه أنس بن مالك، بفارس. وكان أبوه مولى لأنس.
ينسب له كتاب (تعبير الرؤيا - ط) ذكره ابن النديم، وهو غير (منتخب الكلام في تفسير الأحلام) المطبوع، المنسوب إليه أيضا، وليس له .

يعتبر هذا الكتاب "تفسير الأحلام" المنسوب إلى ابن سيرين في أشهر الكتب في هذا المجال لشموليته واتساع موضوعاته. وقد اعتمد مقدمتين ذكر في أولاهما مفهومه للرؤيا والحلم، وشرح في الثانية الآداب التي يجب أن يتصف بها المعبر كالمعرفة بكتاب الله وبسنة رسوله صلى الله عليه وسلم، وبإلمامه العميق باللغة العربية إضافة إلى قدرته على سبر أغوار النفس البشرية لأن كل هذا مرتبط بتفسير الحلم.
وبعد هذه المقدمة قسم المؤلف كتابه على تسعة وخمسين باباً عالج فيها مختلف أنواع الرؤى، والأحلام التي يراها الإنسان في النوم، وطريقة تأويلها، ومغزى رموزها وركائزها في اللاشعور.
