يُشكّل هذا الكتاب أساساً للعقائد والتشريع لطائفة المورمون، ويعدّونه سِفراً مقدساً، كُتب من قِبَل أنبياء قدماء. وهو يدوّن ما جرى بين مجموعتين من المهاجرين لأمريكا، جاءت إحداهما من أورشليم والأخرى من بابل، وبعد حروب وصراعات دامية، أفنوا بعضهم، ما عدا مجموعة، يفترض أنهم أجداد الهنود الأمريكيين. تقوم عقيدة المورمون على قناعة تامة بأنهم أتباع كنيسة مسيحية، تؤمن بالكتاب المقدس، وأن السيد المسيح ظهر في أرض أمريكا بعد قيامته، وهو مَنْ أوحى بكتاب مورمون لجوزيف سميث الذي هو نبي مثل النبي موسى؛ حيث استلم ألواحاً ووحياً ربانياً، وكُلِّف بإستعادة العقيدة المسيحية التي تبدّلت. ومهما تكن آراؤنا حول المارمونية، ومهما تكن الحملات الموجّهة ضدّها، وخاصة من الكنائس المسيحية، فهذا لا يمنع من كونها واحدة من أسرع الديانات انتشاراً، فلها تواجدها القوي والموزّع على جغرافية العالم. وبما أنها تكتسب مزيداً من المؤمنين بها، ففيها - إذنْ - ما يلبّي الرغبات الروحية لعدد متزايد من الناس. وحتى إن لم نؤمن بها، فهي تستحق النظر بتراثها الديني، ودراسته؛ لأنه جزء من التراث الديني العالمي.
