يعالج هذا الكتاب موضوع متنوعة، إنما يجمعها خيط واحد، يربط بين قضايا التسوية السياسية كما عبر عنها اتفاق أوسلو عام 1993، وما نتج عنه من تداعيات. وهو محاولة رصد لمصير ثورة تاريخية اجتهدت بأن الذهاب إلى قلعة الخصم سيشكل رافعة لاستعادة الأرض ولإنشاء دولة فلسطينية مستقلة، ثم واجهت المصير المحتوم الذي بدأ فيه الخصم الإسرائيلي يتفنن في عمليات التنكيل السياسي، متطلعاً إلى لحظة الاستسلام الكامل لهذه الثورة، وتحقيق انتصاره النهائي عليها.
لقد تم تصوير أتفاق أوسلو على أنه مصالحة تاريخية، ولكن هذا لم يكن سوى تفاؤل تبسيطي فلسطيني، أما الإسرائيلي فقد كان هدفه متركزاً على تجويف ثلاث مؤسسات وإنهائها، تمثل الراية المرفوعة: منظمة التحرير الفلسطينية، وحركة المقاومة الفلسطينية، والسلطة الوطنية الناشئة، وقد تم ذلك بأساليب سياسية أحياناً، وبأساليب عسكرية أحياناً أخرى، وبالاغتيال في مرحلة لاحقة.
يحتل الرئيس ياسر عرفات في هذا الكتاب مكانة بارزة. فيه نقد شديد لما قام به منذ اتفاق أوسلو وتطبيقاته. وفيد تقدير كبير لمكانته كقائد. وقد يبدو هذا التقييم غريباً لكثيرين. ولكن ياسر عرفات لا يقيم من خلال موقف واحد، فهو قائد مسيرة مديدة، بينه وبين الشعب الفلسطيني كتاب متعدد الصفحات، أيده الشعب الفلسطيني في صفحات كثيرة، وخالفه في صفحات معدودة، ونعاه بحزن وألم حين غاب وهو ممسك بالحقوق الفلسطينية رافضاً التخلي عنها، ودفع حياته ثمناً لكلمة "لا" قالها في وجه الدولة العظمى الوحيدة في مفاوضات كامب ديفيد 2000.
وإذا كانت إسرائيل قد نجحت في تدمير كل ما يتعلق باتفاق أوسلو، ولكنها فشلت في تدمير الشعب الفلسطيني ودفعه نحو الاستسلام. وهي تنفجر غضباً كلما انطلق صاروخ نحوها، لا لأن هذا الصاروخ يقلقها، بل لأنه يعبر عن الإرادة الشعبية الفلسطينية التي لا تزال حية وصامدة. وعند هذه النقطة يتحدث الإسرائيليون أنفسهم عن "هزيمتهم" في المعركة، وذهبوا نحو الاختباء داخل "الجدار العازل"، بينما توجه الفلسطينيون خارج الجدار نحو العالم كله.
يعالج المؤلف، في هذا الكتاب، قضايا متنوعة لكنها تلتقي كلها حول محور السياسة الفلسطينية وتقلباتها، وهو يتخذ منها موقفاً دون ان ينجرف إلى تيار الرفض، وقد عرف المؤلف، في السنوات الاخيرة، بمعارضته الحاسمة لاتفاق أوسلو، وكذلك بمعارضته لتعديل الميثاق الوطني الفلسطيني، وله حالياً نشاط ملحوظ في اللجان والمؤتمرات المتعلقة بحق العودة.
