في 22/6/2002، نشرت صحيفة هآرتس الصهيونية مقتطفات من مقابلة أجراها صحفي صهيوني مع الرئيس ياسر عرفات تحت عنوان يوحي بأن عرفات قد أعلن قبوله (ورقة كلينتون)، وضمن سياق يفهم منه أن عرفات، بسبب الحصار الذي كان مضروباً عليه في مقره في رام الله، وقد رضخ أخيراً للضغوطات الإسرائيلية راضياً بخطة كلينتون، ومسقطاً مطالبته بحق اللاجئين الفلسطينيين في العودة إلى وطنهم. ولكننا لو عدنا إلى نص تلك المقابلة نفسها، وإلى غيره من الوثائق والنصوص والتقارير الصحفية، لوجدنا أن عرفات قد أعلن عن وجود تحفظات لديه على خطة كلينتون باعتراف كلينتون نفسه، لوجدنا-من جهة أخرى-أنه ليس ثمة ما يشير إلى تنازل عرفات عن حق العودة، الذي قال "إن التوصل إلى حل لمشكلة 350 ألف لاجئ في لبنان له أولوية". هذا واحد من أشكال الخداع الذي مارسه العدو عبر أجهزته الإعلامية، لينسب-من جهة-فشل مفاوضات كامب ديفيد (26/7/2000) إلى فلسطينيين، وليوحي-من جهة أخرى-بأن الفلسطينيين مستعدون لتقديم أقصى التنازلات عند الضرورة، وهذا، بطبيعة الحال، ما يمكن أن يحدث بلبلة كبيرة في الشارع الفلسطيني والعربي. هذا الكتاب يعرض للتضليل والخديعة، التي حاك العدو خيوطها لإفشال مفاوضات كامب ديفيد، بلغة علمية تمسك بكل التفاصيل ولا تغفل مصدراً صحفياً دون أن تفلّيه وتحفر فيه عن الحقيقة التي سرعان ما اهتزت في وعينا وذاكرتنا الضعيفة. إنه ليس مجرد كتاب للدفاع عن حقيقة ما جرى وإصحاح للتاريخ، إنه-بالدرجة الأولى-كتاب لإيقاظ الذاكرة، وإنقاذها من كسلها المميت.
