تتكون معظم الجينومات الكائنات الحية ذات التشكيل الخلوي، ومن ضمنها الإنسان، من الحامض النووي الريبي المنقوص الأوكسجين Dexyribonucleic acid DNA، أما جينومات الفيروسات، بإعتبارها (كائنات) لا خلوية، فإنها تحتوي على الــ DNA وبعضها على الـــ Ribonucleic Acid: RNA .
تعد الأحماض النووية DNA والــ RNA جزيئات بوليمرية (مؤلفة من عدة أجزاء متماثلة - Polymeric Molecules متكونة من سلاسل لتحت وحدات subunits تدعى: nucleotides .
يتألف جينوم الإنسان، والذي يعد أعلى الجينومات المتطورة لجميع الكائنات الحية متعددة الخلايا والمملكة الحيوانية، من جزئين مميزين وهما: الجينوم النووي والجينوم المايتوكونديري.
