يعتبر علم تصنيف الفطريات من العلوم المعقدة التى مرت بمراحل كثيرة على مدى التاريخ , ففى البداية كانت الفطريات تابعة للمملكة النباتية قسم النباتات الثالوسية (المشريات) Thallophyte , ثم أصبحت مملكة مستقلة تضم الفطريات الحقيقية كمجموعة وحيدة السلف monophyletic group . ولقد اعتمدت نظم التصنيف السابقة للفطريات في المقام الأول على الصفات الخارجية والتكاثر الجنسى , وكانت هذه الصفات في حاجة إلى تحديث مستمر لتعكس بشكل أدق علاقات النشوء والتطور phylogenetic relationships على النحو الذي تحدده نظم التصنيف الجزيئية molecular systematics ولما كانت الصفات الجزيئية ضرورية في حالات الصفات المورفولوجية المتقاربة ، أو المختزلة ، أو المفقودة فى بعض الأنواع , وهذا ينطبق بشكل خاص على الأنواع التي لا تتكاثر جنسياً , التى تصنف حالياً مع الفطريات الأخرى الأكثر قرابة التى تتكاثر جنسياً , كانت هناك حاجة ملحة إلى تصنيف أكثر دقة ولقد أدى التطور الهائل فى تقنيات البيولوجيا الجزيئية إلى بناء أشجار النشوء والتطور evolutionary trees للفطريات , مما دعا المؤلف الى القاء الضوء على هذا الانجاز العظيم فى مجال التصنيف الحديث للفطريات على أساس البيولوجيا الجزيئية .ويعتبر هذا الكتاب حلقة من سلسلة طويلة من الكتب والمراجع العلمية للمؤلف تناولت الفطريات من ناحية تركيبها وتغذيتها وتكاثرها ودورها فى البيئة وعلاقتها بالانسان والنبات وغيرهما من الكائنات الحية الأخرى والبيئة من حولها , سواء الفطريات صغيرة أو كبيرة الحجم مثل فطريات عيش الغراب والاشنات , وقد استعان المؤلف في هذا الكتاب بكثير من الرسوم التوضيحية آملاً أن يسهم ذلك فى تسهيل فهم طبيعة الفطريات وتطورها الذي أدي إلى تنوع هذه المملكة الرائعة.
