الخلية هي أصغر وحدة يمكن أن تعبر عن الحياة بكل مقوماتها. ولابد للخلايا من الحصول على طاقة من مصدر خارجي لتقوم بالعمليات الحيوية مثل النمو والترميم والتكاثر. ولتحقيق ذلك تدور في الخلية تفاعلات كيميائية وفيزيائية يطلق عليها في مجموعها اسم الأيض والتفاعلات الأيضية لا تجري إلا في وجود وسائل متخصصة ونوعية تسمى الإنزيمات وهي جزئيات بروتينية تعجل وتسهل جريان التفاعلات الكيمو-حيوية، دون أن تدخل بذاتها في التفاعلات وبالتالي فهي لا تستهلك، ولكن فقط تعتريها تغيرات وقتية. وكأي مادة بروتينية فإن تركيبة كل إنزيم تكون مشفرة على قطعة من شريط الحمض النووي "د ن ا DNA"... يطلق عليها اسم "جين Gene".
