ليس من السهل كتابة تاريخ قرية من القرى اللبنانية، فالمشكلة الأساسية تكمن في عدم توافر الأرشيف اللازم لإعطاء فكرة كافية ووافية عن تاريخ القرى والمجتمعات، أو عدم سهولة الوصول إليه.
عدا أن الكثير من الأرشيف المكتوب متناثرٌ وغير مجموع، أو تعرَّض للتلف نتيجة عوامل متعددة.
وفي ما يتعلق بتاريخ "البربارة" فإن الصعوبة نجمت عن إفتقاد أرشيف للضيعة في مطرانية طرابلس للروم الأورثوذوكس التي ألحِقت بها البربارة لقرون عدة، كما في مطرانية جبل لبنان التي انتقلت البربارة إلى رعايتها في العقود السابقة.
لذلك، اعتمدنا على بعض الأرشيف المكتوب عن تاريخها مثلما ذُكر في كتبٍ وإحصاءاتٍ تعود إلى القرن التاسع عشر، بما فيه إحصاء داود باشا في عام 1867، وإحصاء عام 1906 المذكور في عدد من الكتب، إضافة إلى الإحصاء الذي قامت به سلطات الإنتداب الفرنسي في عام 1921- 1922 للقاطنين والمغتربين، علاوة على دفتر المعمودية في كنيسة البربارة، ودفتر المختار بديع الذي ورثه عن والده نخلة أمين نادر ودوَّن فيه سجلات أهالي البربارة، فضلاً عن عدد من المصادر والوثائق.
وعسى في ذلك أن نكون قد نجحنا في هذا الكتاب في وضع لبنة لتاريخ البربارة، يمكن أن يبني عليها الباحثون للقيام بأبحاث أكثر شمولية ودقة.
