تناولت هذه الدراسة مجتمع المنوفية الذي يمثل أبرز أشكال المجتمع الزراعي وقد اختاره المؤلف لما يوفر له من وثائق سمت صورة متكاملة لهذا المجتمع تمثلت في دفاتر التعداد السكاني وسجلات الإدارة المحلية ووثائق الشرعية وقد رجع إليها المؤلف في أماكن حفظها.
كما تناولت الدراسة الحكم التركي ودور الأقلية التركية الحاكمة، وعلاقة الإدارة بالنظام القضائي وأيضاً تناولت الأحوال الاقتصادية، والدور الذي قامت به الحكومة لربط الإقليم بالعاصمة وتكريس المركزية وتطبيق نظام الاحتكار كما اهتمت الدراسة بالأحوال الاجتماعية وظروف تمرد الفلاحين. وانتشار نزعات التعصب والانقسامات وحوادث السرقة والقتل وغيرها. ومن هنا كانت أهمية هذه الدراسات الميكروسكوبية التي تناولت شريحة معينة من جسد المجتمع الريفي لإعطاء فكرة عامة عن بقية شرائح الجسد.
