يتناول هذا الكتاب موضوع الجغرافيا السياسية لبلاد الشام أو سوريا و هي البقعة الجغرافية التي تمتد من حدود فلسطين مع سيناء و من خليج العقبة جنوبا إلى لواء اسكندرون المتاخم لمنطقة كيليكيا شمالا . و من ساحل البخر المتوسط غربا إلى البادية السورية حتى منطقة البوكمال على ضفاف الفرات شرقا . و تفصل شبه جزيرة سيناء بلاد الشام عن مصر لكنها لا تشكل حاجزا بينهما كذلك تشكل منطقة كيليكيا شمالا امتدادا لبلاد الشام يوصلها بسلسلة جبال طوروس و تقيم حلقة وصل بينها و بين هضبة الاناضول أما شرقا فلا يعد نهر الفرات حاجزا طبيعيا بين الشام و بلاد ما بين النهرين بل على العكس فهو يعتبر حلقة وصل بين المنطقتين كذلك تشكل صحراء النفوذ امتدادا للبادية السورية و تصلها بمنطقة حائل شمال هضبة نجد ما يجعلها عرضة للهجرات البدوية الوافدة من تلك المنطقة و من شبه الجزيرة العربية و بالتالي عرضة للتأثيرات الاتية منها . و كنت انهيت عام 2004 اطروحة الدكتوراه عن السياسة الخارجية لسورية ( الجمهورية العربية السورية ) فلاحظت أن سوريا ( بلاد الشام بالحدود التي تم وصفها آنفا ) لم تكن قط موحدة سياسيا إلا عندما كانت جزءا من نطاق سياسي اوسع كما كانت عليه الحال ايام الاشوريين و الفرس حتى القرن الرابع قبل الميلاد و الرومان و البيزنطيين حتى القرن السابع الميلادي و خلال العهدين الاموي و العباسي الأول حتى اواخر القرن التاسع الميلادي و كذلك كما كانت عليه الحال ايام الايوبيين و المماليك و العثمانيين . و لاحظت أيضا أن السياسة السورية في القرن العشرين تميزت في الغالب بالتقلبات السريعة التي اكتشفت إنها ناجمة عن تنافس ثلاث طبقات جيو – سياسية في الشرق الادنى على سورية و هي العراق و تركيا و مصر بينما كان لبنان بشكل دائما مدخلا لتدخل القوى الغربية في الشؤون السورية . و من هنا يمكننا أن نفهم السبب الذي ادى إلى سلسلة انقلابات في سورية بين العامين 1949 و 1970 . أما السبب الذي ادى إلى استقرار سورية في عهد الرئيس حافظ الاسد فيكمن في قدرته على فرض سلطة قوية و عبر السيطرة على مدينة دمشق و هي المحور الاساس لبلاد الشام .
