هذه نُتف عجلى أزيح بها غطاء عن مظهر عبقريات نفر من صنّاع التاريخ العسكري وعن بؤس مصائر آخرين. وربما لن يأتي أمثال معظم أولئك الذين جادوا بنبوغهم في حملات كلاسيكية؛ ففي زمن المواجهات اللامتناظرة بين جيوش نظامية ومجموعات غير نظامية، أو ميليشياوية، ما عاد ثمة إنتصارات حاسمة ولا هزائم حاسمة، فأصبح المنتصر مهزوماً بمعنى ما والمهزوم منتصراً بمعنى ما، وبالتالي اختلفت معايير صناعة التاريخ العسكري وعزّ صنّاعه.
