ينطلق هذا الكتاب في النظر إلى نبوّة محمد وإلى النبوّة عامة من إفتراض أوّلي مؤدّاه أن النبوّة ظاهرة إنسانية صرفة، وأن الإله الذي تتحدّث عنه النبوّة لم يُحْدِث النبوّة ويصنعها وإنما النبوّة هي التي أحدَثَت إلهها وصنعته.
ويركّز الكتاب في تفسير ظاهرة النبوّة على جانبها الإبداعي والخلّاق أو جانب الخيال في نشاطها، ولأن النبوّة ليست مجرّد نشاط فردي منعزل وإنما هي أيضاً نشاط إجتماعي يتداخل فيه نشاط الفرد الذي يدّعي النبوّة مع نشاط المجتمع الذي يحيط به، فإن الكتاب يعالج أيضاً البُعد الإجتماعي للنبوّة، وهو البُعد الذي ما كان من الممكن للنبوّات الناجحة أن تنجح من دونه.
وفي النظر إلى الجانب الإجتماعي للنبوّة يحرص الكتاب على إبراز دور مجتمع المؤمنين؛ إذ إن خيال النبي يخلق، في المقام الأول، مجتمع المؤمنين ينبوّته ليأتي بعد ذلك، وفي المقام الثاني، خيالُ مجتمع المؤمنين فيُسهم بدوره في تثبيت النبوّة وتعزيزها وتمديد خيالها ونشره.
وهذا الدور الحيوي الذي يقوم به مجتمع المؤمنين هو ما يصفه الكتاب بصناعة النبوّة ويفصّل في أمره.
يطرح محمد محمود، للمرة الأولى، في تاريخنا الفكريّ، منذ سقوط الخلافة في صورتها العثمانية، الأسئلة الكيانيّة على أصولنا التراثيّة العربيّة - الإسلاميّة، في أفقٍ خلّاقٍ عقلانيٍّ كونيّ.
إنطلاقاً من هذه الرؤية، وهذه الأسئلة، يُبدع فكراً عربياً جديداً، ويؤسِّس لكتابةِ تاريخٍ عربيٍّ إسلاميٍّ آخر.
