لقد احتل الكلب مكانة عظيمة عند الإنسان منذ العصور التاريخية القديمة، وتزداد أهميته لكافة الشعوب طبقاً لتعدد استخداماتها سواء في الحروب، أو مكافحة الجريمة بأنواعها والكشف عنها، أو في جر المركبات، وقيادة الأكفاء، وحراسة المنازل والمنشآت وقطعان الحيوانات في المرعى، وفي الصيد، والأبحاث، والسباقات، والزينة، وكونيس للإنسان واللعب مع الكبار والصغار.
ولهذا أنشأت تجارة الكلاب، وإكثار السلالات النقية، والخلط لاستحداث سلالات ذات مواصفات مرغوبة، كما أنشئت صناعات لأماكن إيواء الكلاب ولإنتاج أعلافها وعقاقيرها وتحصيناتها، ولإسعافها فتحت المستشفيات البيطرية على مدار ساعات اليوم والليلة، وتجري الأبحاث العملية لمعرفة احتياجاتها الغذائية، ولبحث مشاكلها لحلها.
ورغم ذلك كله يعوز مكتبتنا العربية مؤلفات عن الكلاب في أي فرع من فروع علومها، لذلك تيسرت لي فرصة إعداد هذا المؤلف الذي راعيت فيه الإشارة إلى تاريخ الكلاب واستخداماتها، وأصلها في المملكة الحيوانية، وسلوكها، ورعايتها منذ شرائها صحياً وفسيولوجياً وتناسلياً، وقد تم التركيز على احتياجاتها الغذائية في مختلف مراحلها الفسيولوجية.
