يهدف هذا الكتاب إلى النظر فى الأسئلة والمشكلات الخاصة بالعادات الجنسية لدى البشر، وإلى تعريف القارئ بدقة وبطريقة ممتعة رأى العلم فى هذه الأسئلة والمشكلات، فبالرغم من أن دائرة المعرفة العلمية قد اتعسعت كثيراً، إلا أن القليل جداً من هذه المعرفة قد وصل إلى رجل الشارع، وقد يرجع ذلك إلى اهتمام الكتاب وانشغالهم بالنصائح حول مايجب فعله وعن كيفية ممارسة الجنس، وربما لأن علماء النفس والفسيولوجيا كانوا يرون أن الكتابة للجمهور تنتقص من هيبتهم العلمية.
وبغض النظر عن السبب، هناك فجوة فى الكتابات الشعبية، ونحرص هنا على أن نملأها مع تقديم وصف دقيق للأدلة العلمية المتاحة حول موضوعات مثل الاختلافات بين الجنسين، وكذلك الاختلافات الشخصية فيما يتعلق بالسلوك الجنسى، والمداعبات، والحب، والزواج والطلاق، والخيالات الجنسية، والإثارة والانحرافات، والشذوذ وصعوبات الوصول إلى نشوة الجماع، وكذلك علاج الاضطرابات الجنسية.
وسيعتمد هذا الكتاب فى مادته على الحقائق المستمدة من الأبحاث والتجارب العلمية، دون أن ننسى ذكر التأثيرات الاجتماعية لبعض النتائج، وهذا الكتاب ليس كتاباً أكاديمياً متخصصاً، لذلك لم نسجل آلاف المراجع التى استفدنا منها، ولكننا فقط ذكرنا الكتب التى يمكن أن يتوجه إليها القارئ العادى، والتى سيجد فيها القارئ المتخصص قرائم بالمراجع التى يمكن أن يرجع إليها للإمام بتفاصيل الموضوع.
