مع استمرار التطور العلمي في مختلف الميادين، وبصورة خاصة في القرن العشرين برزت الى الأمام ظواهر سكانية من نوع جديد حفزت الباحثين والعلماء على دراستها وتحليلها ومحاولة بيان أسبابها الاقتصادية والاجتماعية ونشأت لذلك مدارس فكرية حديثة تتبنى وجهات نظر متباينة في عديد من الأحوال.
وكان من أبرز هذه الظواهر الزيادة الهائلة في معدل النمو السكاني، التي أدت من جهة إلى مضاعفة عدد سكان الكرة الأرضية كل ثلاثين أو أربعين سنة مما أدى إلى فرض ضغوط كبيرة على الموارد الوطنية وبصورة خاصة بالنسبة للدول الاقل نمواً.
ونتيجة للتقسيم الدولي الجائر للعمل وانقسام العالم الى دول غنية ودول أخرى فقيرة، أضحى ارتفاع عدد السكان الموجود معظمه في الدول الفقيرة، يشكل ضغوط فعلية كبيرة على موارد هذه الدول بصورة أصبحت تعيق حركة التنمية فيها.
لقد أضحت مسألة اعادة التوازن بين الموارد البشرية والسكان من جهة، والموارد الطبيعية والانتاجية من جهة أخرى, الهم الأكبر للدول النامية والموضوع الأكثر جاذبية لاهتمام المدارس الفكرية المختلفة والمنظمات الدولية والاقليمية.
هذا الكتاب علم السكان النظريات والمفاهيم يمثل محاولة بيان ودراسة أهم المفاهيم السكانية وكشف العوامل التي تؤثر فيها أو تتاثربها، وكذلك دراسة تطور الأفكار والنظريات السكانية منذ أقدم الأزمنة.
