في مجموعتها الشعرية "بغداد خاتون" تبدأ الشاعرة فاطمة عبد القادر تبحث في أروقة التراث مفتشة عما تجده ملائماً لتجربتها الشعرية، فالوطن ليس الأرض فقط، ولا الجغرافيا، الوطن هو الإنسان، والإنسان الذي تبحث عنه الشاعرة ذو مكانة رفيعة، لذلك احالت مفردة "خاتون" في العنوان إلى جانب "بغداد" للتعبير عن حال الإغتراب الذي يعيشه الإنسان العراقي خارج حدود الوطن بعدما كان يشبه "خاتون / لقب" تبجيل للسيدة ذات المكانة الراقية" وهي بهذا المعنى تريد لبغداد اليوم استعادة مكانتها التي ضاعت في حروب لم تنتهِ حتى كتابة هذه السطور، فتبدأ الشاعرة بمخاطبتها وإرسال الرسائل إليها قائلة: " بغداد يا وردةَ الرؤيا، بين العيونِ / ويا حمامة السلم وغصنَ زيتونِ / إذ تأتيكَ كل القوافي مبايعةً / أختارُ مما سأقوله فيكِ يا أمّ البنين / من طينك صاغَ اللهُ لي بدني / ومن نسفِكِ سَعٌ في شراييني / أشتاقُ إلى ليلكِ وشطَّ دجلتكِ / يا بيتي الأول وسفر تكويني / مهما أبعدَتْني عنك المسافاتُ / تلك المسافات، منكِ تُدنيني ...".
يضم الكتاب إحدى وثلاثون قصيدة في الشعر العربي الحديث جاءت تحت العناوين الآتية: "إلى بغداد إبتهالاتي" ، "أصبحت في العشرين" ، " عطلة الصيف" ، "دجلة" ، "سرمد" ، "إلى مهاجر" ، "أغنية حب" ، "لا تغضب" ، "بين غابات المساء" ، "بغداد خاتون" (...) وعناوين أخرى.
