"بغداد في العشرينيات" طريقة في الكتابة أقرب إلى الشهادة، وهي خالية من الدوافع التي تكمن غالباً وراء الكتابات من النوع الآخر، الكتابات السياسية أو الشخصية، وهذه الطريقة لا تهدف إلى مطمح أو مطعم، كما لا تلجأ إلى التبرير أو التستر على الحقائق، ربما لم تقل كل شيء، لكن ما قالته فيه حد كبير من الدقة والتفاصيل والمناخ، وهذا يساعد القارئ الكاتب لا يتحدث عن مدينة عادية، وإنما عن بغداد، التي تعني الكثير من الذكرى والواقع، والتي بمجرد أن تذكر يضج التاريخ، وتمتلئ المخيلة بالصور والحنين، عدا عن أن الفترة الزمنية التي يتناولها الكاتب لها أهمية استثنائية، فترة سقوط الإمبراطورية العثمانية فالاحتلال الإنكليزي، ثم قيام الدولة العراقية الحديثة، فإن كل هذه الأسباب تجعنا في مواجهة كتاب استثنائي، حافل بكم هائل من التفاصيل الدقيقة حول كل موضوع من الموضوعات التي تناولها، ففي البداية يوفر حوادث بغداد في تلك الفترة، خاصة السياسية ليدخل إلى رحاب العالم الأثير بالنسبة له، فيبدأ بالشخصيات الشعبية كالزهاوي والكرملي وتوفيق اجانص وعرب وشيخان، وينتقل إلى التحدث عن أطباء بغداد فيرسم صورة عن الأطباء ومدعي الطب والأطباء الشعبيين، وحين ينتقل الكاتب إلى الصناعات التي كانت رائجة في العشرينات، فإنه يذكر عددا منها مثل خياطي الصحون، والطماسين، ومبيض القدور... أما وهو يتطرق إلى التجارة والأسواق والصيارفة وباعة الجملة والمفرق... فإنه يتحدث عن الموضوع بمعرفة مميزة، وفي هذا الفصل نتعرف عن كثب كيف تكونت الثروات، وكيف تم الحصول على الامتيازات، ثم كيف تداخلت التجارة مع السياسة... كما ويخصص الكاتب فصولاً عن التمثيل والملاهي، والطرب والغناء والأعياد ومقاهي بغداد وأطعمتها وحلوياتها...
