لم يكن هذا الكتاب هو المحاولة الأولى لتأليف كتاب في جغرافية النقل والتجارة، إذ سبق وان تم تكليفي مع زميلي الأستاذ الدكتور سري المدرس والدكتور يوسف السلطان في جامعة البصرة لتأليف كتاب منهجي يعتمده طلبة أقسام الجغرافية في الجامعات العراقية وفعلاً ظهر ذلك الكتاب إلى النور عام (1988) تحت عنوان جغرافية النقل والتجارة الدولية.
وبعد مرور أكثر من عقد من السنوات تغيرت الكثير من المعطيات البيانية لحركة النقل والإتصال في العالم، كما تبدلت توجهات السكان نحو وسائط النقل وظهرت أسباب وعوامل جديدة لها تأثيراتها على واقع حركة النقل والإتصال وواقع حركة التبادل التجاري، كما أن للإتصالات اليوم دورها الفعال والسريع لأغراض الخدمات والتجارة، فقط ربطت أطراف العالم وقرّبت كثيراً من مساحاته ومسافاته حتى أمسى اليوم بما يشبه القرية الكبيرة، وبسبب هذه المتغيرات كان لا بد من متابعة واقع النقل والتجارة في كتاب جديد تلافينا فيه نواقص كتابنا الجامعي السابق وأضفنا إليه وسائط النقل الجديدة من الإتصالات اللاسلكية والنقل بالأنانيب والأسلاك.
