معَ ظُهورِ النَّشاطِ البشريِّ وتَنامِيه على سَطحِ الأَرْض، ظَهرَتِ الحاجَةُ إلى الانْتِقالِ مِن مَكانٍ لِآخَر، ومعَ تَطوُّرِ صُورِ ذلِكَ الانتقالِ وأَنْواعِ المَوادِّ المَنقُولة، ظلَّتِ العَلاقةُ بَينَ النَّقلِ وكُلٍّ مِنَ المَسافةِ والزَّمنِ وَثِيقةً وحافِلةً بالعَديدِ مِنَ المُتغيِّرات، فَضْلًا عمَّا تَشهَدُه مِن تغيُّراتٍ سَرِيعةٍ مُتلاحِقة. ومِن هُنا تَأتِي «جُغْرافِيةُ النَّقلِ» لتَتناوَلَ تِلكَ العَلاقةَ بَينَ النَّقلِ كنَشاطٍ حَيَويٍّ والجُغْرافيا كمَسْرحٍ طبيعيٍّ لِذلِكَ النَّشاطِ يَتأثَّرُ بِهِ ويُؤثِّرُ فِيه، وهُو مَا يُقدِّمُه بالكثيرِ مِنَ التَّركِيزِ الدُّكتور محمد رياض فِي كِتابِه الذي بَينَ أَيْدِينا، مُتناوِلًا مُسبِّباتِ النَّقلِ وتَطوُّرَه التارِيخِي، وكَذلِكَ عَناصِرُه وأَنْواعُه المُختلِفةُ باخْتِلافِ وَسائِطِه، مائيَّةً وبَريَّةً وجَويَّة، كَما يُحلِّلُ العَلاقةَ بَينَ النَّقلِ والاقْتِصاد، مُستعرِضًا عَددًا مِنَ النَّظرِياتِ التي تَربُطُ بَينَ مَواقِعِ الإنْتاجِ والتَّسوِيقِ وتَكلِفةِ النَّقْل، ويُسلِّطُ الضَّوءَ على مُشكِلاتِ النَّقلِ والتَّحدِّياتِ التي يُواجِهُها في الحاضِرِ والمُستقبَل.
