تهتم الجغرافية الحياتية بدراسة التوزيع المكاني للأحياء، النباتية منها الحيوانية، على سطح الكرة الأرضية، وبالعوامل التي تؤدي إلى إختلاف الأنماط المكانية لها.
والحقيقة أن جغرافية النبات والحيوان هي مدار إهتمام الباحثين في علم البيولوجيا إلى جانب إهتمام الجغرافيين، وإذ يهتم الجغرافيون بذلك فلكونها جزءاً من ظواهر اللاندسكيب الطبيعي الذي يتناوله حقل الجغرافية الطبيعية، ولا بد من التميز بين دراسة الأحياء دراسة جغرافية وأخرى بيولوجية فالثانية تهدف إلى المعرفة الفسلجية والتشريحية بينما تهدف الأولى إلى تحقيق المنهج الجغرافي في دراسة الظواهر، وهو التوزيع وأنماطه والعوامل المؤثرة فيه.
إن الإهتمام بالجغرافية الحياتية إهتمام حديث في وطننا العربي رغم أهميتها كموضوع طبيعي للجغرافية له آثاره المتفاعلة مع الحقول الطبيعية الأخرى، من مناخ وتربة وطبوغرافية، وتزداد أهمية الجغرافية الحياتية اليوم مع زيادة إهتمام الإنسان في الحفاظ على خصائص البيئة وصيانتها من عوامل التدمير والتدهور، وكذلك زيادة الإهتمام بمكونات الغلاف الحيوي فالكثير من الحيوانات والنباتات تضاءلت أعدادها وتقلصت مساحات إنتشارها.
ولغرض التأكيد على المنهج الجغرافي فقد تضمن هذا الكتاب خمسة أبواب تناول الأول منها تعريف الجغرافية الحياتية وأسس تصنيف النبات والحيوان وتناول الثاني العوامل التي تتحكم بتوزيع الغطاء النباتي والباب الثالث اهتم بالغطاء النباتي والمجاميع النباتية الرئيسية... بينما احتوى الباب الرابع تقسيم العالم إلى أقاليم فلوريه وفونيه، أما الباب الخامس فقد اختص بالأحياء المائية، العذبة والمالحة، وجاء بشيء من التفصيل لأن الأحياء المائية لم تحظ بإهتمام أي مؤلف جغرافي أكاديمي فرغبتنا أن تنتهز الفرصة لسد هذا النقص.
