لقد كانت حاجة الإنسان إلى النقل منذ فجر التاريخ وارتبط موضوعه بالحركة الدائمة للإنسان حيث كان ينتقل من مكان إلى آخر بحثاً عن ضرورات الحياة، وتشكلت أولى رحلات الإنسان المنتظمة بين مسكنه (سواء كان الكهف أو الأشجار الكبيرة أو الخيمة...) والمكان الذي كان يجلب منه الطعام والشراب وذلك على إختلاف الأماكن التي كانت فيها بدايات التجمعات الإنسانية والمستوطنات البشرية.
يعتبر موضوع النقل والمشكلات الناتجة عنه قديمة قدم المدن نفسها حيث كانت مدينة روما القديمة تعاني من الإختناقات المرورية مما يضطر السلطات إلى تغيير إتجاه مرور العربات عن بعض الشوارع ومنع دخولها إلى وسط المدينة في أوقات العمل اليومية.
