بين عامي 1934 و1957، قد لا يجد المرء حدثاً بارزاً في الحياة السياسية اللبنانية إلا ولحميد فرنجية دور فيه تصطحب اسمه إلى اليوم هالة من الاحترام، حتى لدى الذين حاربوه من معاصريه أو الذين لم يسمعوا إلا القليل عنه من الأجيال اللاحقة. اسم لمع وغاب باكراً، قد يكون رمزاً لمدرسة معينة في ممارسة السياسة، ليس لما تمتع به من مواهب وحسب، ولكن أيضاً نظراً للشخصيات التي واكبها وواكبته في العمل السياسي وللفترة التاريخية التي عاشها لبنان آنذاك.
ما هي تفاصيل هذه السيرة وتلك الأحداث؟ وما سرّ القفزة النوعية التي ارتقت بممثل إحدى الزعامات الشمالية المارونية الكبيرة إلى ما هو أبعد وأكبر من الطائفة والمنطقة؟ ما هي "الخيمياء" التي امتزجت على أساسها المعطيات الفردية بالمعطيات التاريخية والسياسية والاجتماعية لتصنع تلك الشخصية؟ يحاول الكتاب الإجابة عن هذه الأسئلة، وعن أسئلة كثيرة أخرى، مستنداً إلى العديد من الوثائق والمراجع وإلى آراء حية كثيرة لسياسيين وصحافيين ومراقبين عرفوا حميد فرنجية النائب والوزير والزعيم والمثقف، قابلهم المؤلف أو حصل على شهادتهم الخطية، متوخياً الدقة والموضوعية اللتين بدونهما لا قيمة لأي سيرة حياة مهما عظمت شخصية صاحب السيرة.
غير أن الموضوعية لا تعني انعدام "النكهة" والأسلوب. وميزة الكتاب تكمن أيضاً في أسلوب لا يخلو من الحنين أو الدعابة أو الغضب. فكما أن حميد فرنجية أب وإنسان في هذه السيرة، إلى جانب كونه شخصية فذة كذلك فإن لكاتب السيرة حضوره وشخصيته، وله رأي فيما يسرد ويروي. ولعل الرأي الأهم هو أن الكتاب ليس مجرد عودة إلى الماضي أو محاولة لإنقاذ حقائق معرضة لأن تذهب طي النسيان، بل إنه قبل كل شيء قراءة للحاضر وعبرة للمستقبل. لأن سيرة حميد فرنجية مرتبطة ارتباطاً وثيقاً بما يسميه المؤلف "جمهورية الاستقلال" ولأن هذا الاستقلال الذي يكثر الحديث عنه يقوم بالنهاية على أسس بسيطة وصلبة في آن معاً، وعلى حكمة جسدها رعيل من السياسيين الذين لم ينالوا نصيبهم من التقدير.
