اخترت عهد الانتداب الفرنسي بالذات موضوعاً لهذه الدراسة لثلاثة أسباب:
أولاً: لأن الأزمة اللبنانية الراهنة الناجمة بالدرجة الأولى عن اختلاف اللبنانيين حول الولاء المطلق للكيان اللبناني السيد الحر المستقل والاعتراف الكامل به وطناً نهائياً لهم قد بدأت فعلاً بصورة عملية جادة في أواخر الحرب العالمية الأولى، وخصوصاً منذ أعلن المفوض السامي الفرنسي الجنرال غورو قيام دولة لبنان الكبير في 1 أيلول سنة 1920.
وثانياً: لأن عهد الإنتداب هذا أغنى أدوار التاريخ اللبناني المعاصر، حتى سنة 1975، بقصص الصراع العقائدي بين الأفرقاء اللبنانيين حول تقرير هوية بلدهم وانتمائه القومي ومصيره السياسي.
وثالثاً: لأنه مع تقديري الكامل للأبحاث القيمة التي أجرتها نخبة من المؤرخين اللبنانيين في السنوات الأخيرة في هذا الحقل فإن المجال لا يزال واسعاً والحاجة قائمة لإجراء المزيد من الدراسات والأبحاث الموضوعية الموسعة لتسليط أنوار الحقيقة الساطعة على بعض قضايا هذا العهد وجوانبه التي لا يزال يكتنفها شيء من الغموض والالتباس.
