"عن الديمقراطية في أميركا" هو خلاصة رحلة ألكسي دو توكفيل إلى أميركا والتي استغرقت أقل من عام، ولكن إنجازه استغرق عشر سنوات، ليكون مؤلفاً خالداً ومرجعاً لا غنى عنه لأغلب ما كتب في السياسة والفلسفة وعلم الإجتماع منذ صدوره إلى يومنا هذا.
رأى توكفيل في العالم الجديد (أميركا) تجسيداً للثورة الحقيقية التي تؤسس، من دون عنف أو سفك للدماء، لما ينبغي له التحقق لأجل رفاه الإنسان وإزدهار مجتمعاته.
قدّم توكفيل في كتابه الضخم هذا، الذي ننشره على أجزاء، وصفاً تحليلياً بارعاً للمؤسسات الأميركية، وتناول التأثير الممكن للديمقراطية السائدة هناك على التقاليد والأعراف والعادات القومية للشوعب، إنطلاقاً من المثال الأميركي، ولكنه لم ينطلق من إستقرائه لحال الديمقراطية في أميركا من إعجابٍ منزّه من النقد، فتوكفيل ينتمي، قلباً وقالباً، إلى العالم القديم، لكنه يرى أن الإنتقال إلى الديمقراطية ليس مقدراً له حتماً أن يمر بالثورات الدموية، على غرار ما شهدته فرنسا ومعظم الملكيات الأوروبية.
