في هذا الكتاب، يتابع المؤلف ويحلل اتجاهات تفكير ومواقف الأطراف الإسلامية السياسية المختلفة في مصر خلال الفترة من 1967 إلى 1981 تجاه المسائل الإقليمية والدولية الهامة. ويهدف هذا العمل أيضاً إلى مقارنة آراء ومواقف تبنتها هذه الأطراف في مراحل مختلفة خلال هذه الفترة تجاه قضايا إقليمية دولية، وكذلك مقارنة آراء ومواقف نفس الطرف خلال أكثر من فترة فرعية تندرج في إطار هذه الفترة العامة، وإلى التعرف على أسباب الثبات والتغير في هذه الآراء والمواقف.
ويبحث الكاتب-كلما كان ذلك ممكناً-درجة الانسجام بين مواقف هذه التيارات الإسلامية خلال الفترة محل الدراسة تجاه العلاقات الإقليمية والدولية وبين مواقف قوى سياسية أخرى. كذلك يحلل الكتاب اللغة السياسية التي استخدمتها هذه التيارات للتعبير عن مواقفها تجاه قضايا العلاقات الإقليمية والدولية.
وبالإضافة إلى ما سبق، يبحث الكاتب في مدى تغيير الأطراف الإسلامية في مصر خلال الفترة من 1967 إلى 1981 لمواقفها تجاه قضايا إقليمية ودولية استجابة لتغيرات أو تطورات خارجية، سواء وقعت داخل أو خارج حدود العالم الإسلامي.
