تعد حرب 1967 أبرز حدث شهدته منطقة الشرق الأوسط في النصف الثاني من القرن العشرين . ويرى المؤلف أن ما حدث كان أمراً محتوماً، بسبب طبيعة النظام السياسي المصري آنذاك وما مر به من مراحل منذ قيام ثورة 23 تموز/يوليو 1952، ودوره عموماً على المستويين الإقليمي والدولي، وتنامي دور المؤسسة العسكرية التي سيطرت على أنشطة الدولة كلها، وطبيعة العلاقة بين الرئيس جمال عبد الناصر والمشير عبد الحكيم عامر وما انتهت إليه هذه العلاقة، حيث فقد جال عبد الناصر سيطرته على القوات المسلحة، في حين سيطر عبد الحكيم عامر عليها وأقام له شبكة من الولاءات الشخصية صنع بواسطتها ما هو أشبه بدولة مستقلة داخل الدولة.
يرصد الكتاب كذلك علاقات مصر الخارجية، ويحلل عوامل قيام الوحدة المصرية-السورية وانهيارها، والظروف التي أحاطت بحرب اليمن، ودور أنور السادات في استمرار مصر في هذه الحرب. ويتعرض الكتاب بشكل تفصيلي للأزمة التي سبقت حرب حزيران/يونيو 1967، والتصاعد المتسارع للمواجهة السياسية بين مصر وإسرائيل، والأسلوب الذي أدار به كل طرف الأزمة حتى اندلاع الحرب وحدوث النكسة.
