تعد الماهابهاراتا واحداً من أعظم الكتب في العالم. وهي أيضاً أطول قصيدة كتبت على مر العصور, لقد كتبت بالسنسكريتية. وهي أكثر من مائة ألف مقطع شعري: أطول من الكتاب المقدس بخمس عشرة مرة. وفي التراث الهندي تسمى المهابهاراتا ببساطة الملحمة, وهي رائعة أدب اللغة السنسكريتية الغني جداً.
والقصيدة هي مصدر آلاف المعتقدات والأساطير والأفكار والتعاليم والشخصيات التي هي حتى الآن جزء من الحياة الهندية. وهذه القصيدة العظيمة تحكي قصة النزاع الدموي الطويل بين مجموعتين من أبناء العمومة: الباندافا, وهم خمسة أخوة, والكورافا, الذين يوجد منهم مائة. وهذا النزاع العائلي, الذي يدور حول من سيحكم, ينتهي بمعركة طاحنة يتهدد فيها مصير العالم.
ويرى بعض المؤرخين في القصيدة تصويراً أميناً للحروب بين الدرافيديين والآريين في الألف الثاني قبل الميلاد. ويرى آخرون أن التفسير الصحيح للقصيدة هو تفسير ميثولوجي بأكمله, لكن آخرون أيضاً يؤكدون على أهمية الكتب التعليمية في الملحمة- سياسياً واجتماعياً وأخلاقياً ودينياً- ويرون أن الماهابهاراتا معالجة مطولة للشعائر الملكية.
