روائي فرنسي، درس الحقوق، ولكنه عكف على التأليف الأدبي. أصيب بمرض عصبي جعله يمكث طويلاً في كرواسيه. كان أول مؤلف مشهور له: « التربية العاطفية » (1843 – 1845)، ثم « مدام بوفاري » 1857 التي تمتاز بواقعيتها وروعة أسلوبها، والتي أثارت قضية الأدب المكشوف. ثم تابع تأليف رواياته المشهورة، منها: « سالامبو » 1862، و« تجربة القديس أنطونيوس » 1874، ويعتبر فلوبير مثلاً أعلى للكاتب الموضوعي، الذي يكتب بأسلوب دقيق، ويختار اللفظ المناسب والعبارة الملاءمة.

كان بودلير متأثراً بالعظمة الملحميّة لـ"سلامبو"، ويدّعي غوته أنه من الواجب مطالعة هذا العمل كقصيدة ملحمية وليس كرواية، وقد تكلّم فلوبير نفسه بعد إتمام "مدام بوقاري" عن هواجسه الملحميّة، فقد استهوته الملحمة كصنف ولون، وما انفكّت تعمل على إستمالته.
كانت أمنيته الكبيرة أن يقرأ إلياذة هوميروس الأصلية، وتتجلى المواقف التقليدية للملحمة في "سلامبو": إحصاءات وتنقّلات هائلة للجيوش، او لأمة بأجمعها، مآثر عسكرية، صداقات حماسية، أعمال فردية تندرج في عمل جماعي شامل، دسائس ومكائد، وكل حركة تُمسي مأثرة.
وإلى جانب هذا كلّه تبرز "سلامبو" ابنة هاميلكار، كاهنة معبد تانيت، لتفيض على عتمة المعارك نور بهائها المقدس، المحاط بجلال أبيها، ولتسقط في نهاية الرواية جرّاء حب كتمته في قلبها لعدو قرطاجة زعيم البربر.
في "سلامبو" يتجلّى مبدأ الموت في أنشودة سلامبو التي تصف رأس ماسيسبال المقطوع، المعلق في مقدمة السفينة، والذي تحنّطه حركة الماء والشمس وتجعله أكثر صلابة من الذهب - تصوير وتحنيط خيالي - وكأنّنا بفلوبير يبحث عن جمع مستحيل بين الواقع والمصير، بين الحاضر والمستقبل.
