تسمّى المهابهارتا في الهند "الملحمة"، وهي عينُ الأدب السنسكريتي الثريّ العريق، وهي الأساس والأصل لكثير من المعتقدات والأساطير والتعاليم والشخصيات التي ما تزالُ جزءاً من الحياة في الهند حتى اليوم. هي حكايةُ صراعٍ دمويٍّ بين أبناء باندوا، وهم من نسل الآلهة، وأبناء عمِّهم الأعمى دريتاراشترا، وهم من نسل شيطانيّ. لكن هذا الصراعَ الدمويَّ العنيفَ على المُلك يجتذبُ الأربابَ جميعاً للدخول في المعركة أو اتخاذ موقف منها. الأربابُ والمفاهيمُ الهندوسية الفلسفية والأخلاقية كلُّها تدخلُ في نسيج الحكاية. ثمة قولٌ شائعٌ في الهند مفاده: "كلُّ شيءٍ في المهابهارتا موجودٌ في مكان ما، وما لا يوجدُ فيها لن يوجدَ في أيّ مكانٍ".
