يضم هذا الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا ديوان عروة بن الورد والسموال، وهما من الشعراء الجاهليين حيث كان عُروة بن الورد، من بين الشعراء، أحبُّ شخصيّةٍ وأكثرها جاذبية، ذاك لما اشتمل عليه هذا الشاعر الجاهلي الفطري من آدابٍ إنسانيّة، وأخلاق كريمة، وجودٍ لم يُزنّ بتكلّف، وروحٍ إشتراكيّة تتجلّى في كلّ ما كان يصنعُه من إحسان ويبذله من عَطفٍ وجُود تجاه الصعاليك والمَرضى والضّعفاء.
وشعر عروة لطيفٌ، سائغٌ، ما ألفه الشاعرُ الجاهلي من وقوفٍ على الأطلال، وبكاء على الدّمَن، ووصف للجواد والناقة وغير ذلك، وإنما خرجَ به إلى أغراضٍ إنسانيّة سامية، ويأخذُك، من شعره، ما فيه من جمال معانٍ، وطّلاوةٍ، وإيقاعٍ، وبُعد من الحُوشية.
