ليست الحكايات اللبنانية في أصلها إلا أساطير متداولة في كل أنحاء لبنان، أطلق عليها اسم حكايات لأن صغار اللبنانيين حينما يطلبون من جداتهم، أو أمهاتهم، أو من كبيرات أخواتهم أن تقصّ عليهم أسطورة يقولون للواحدة منهن "إحكي لنا حكاية". وأكثر ما تحكي هذه الحكايات في ليالي الشتاء الباردة، حينما تكسو القرى اللبنانية الجاثمة في المناطق المرتفعة، وتكره السكان على الاكتنان في بيوتهم والجلوس إلى المواقد المشعلة بالحطب.
إلى تلك المواقد تجلس الجدات أو الأمهات أو كبريات الأخوات، ويتحلق حولهن الصبيان والصبيات، فيحكين لهم، بأسلوب جميل جذاب تلك الحكايات. فتوقع الدهشة في عقولهم بما فيها من غرائب أو عجائب وتسليهم في وقت معاً.
ولا يتذوق الصغار وحدهم أمثال هذه الحكايات ويدهشون بها، وإنما يشاركهم في ذلك الحاضرون مثقفين كانوا أم غير مثقفين، ذاك بأنه إذا كانت الحكايات المكتوبة مسلاة الخاصة، فالحكايات الشفوية مسلاة عامة الشعب كبارهم وصغارهم وملهاة لنفوسهم وترويح لألبابهم.
من هذه الحكايات تم اختيار مادة هذا الكتاب والتي هي ثمرة ما تناقلته أفواه كرائم السيدات اللبنانيات، وأفواه بعض رجال لبنان. ولا شأن لمعد هذا الكتاب في اختراع شيء منها، ولا في ابتكاره، وكل ما له هو أنه قد قام بسردها في قالب عربي فصيح مع تعرفه في مقدمات بعضها وتحديد بعض أمكنتها الخيالية، وتسمية بعض أشخاصها بأسماء لم تكن في الأصل لها، ذاك أن مساق الحكاية اقتضى منه هذا التصرف، وربما ترك في بعضها ما ورد فيه من ألفاظ وتعابير عامية لأن الحكاية ترتكز على هذه الألفاظ والتعابير التي يعود بعضها إلى ألفاظ عربية فصيحة حرفها أو شوهها استعمال العامة لها.
