كانت المرأة العربية، منذ جاهليتها، أديبة تستسيغ الشعر وتقرضه، وتلتذ النثر وتنسجه. على ما كانت عليه من الأمية، شأن العرب في ذلك الزمان، يوم لم يكن الخطّ قد وصل إلى بعض نواحس من جزيرتهم ولم يعرفه إلا القليل منهم في كتابه "النساء العربيات". يتحدث كرم البستاني عن نسوة عربياتن منهن شاعرات مجيدات، ومنهن مُغنيات، ومنهن مُحاربات، ومنهن كهانة، وعرافة، وفراسة، يكشفن أسرار الحياة وجميع هؤلاء النسوة عَرفهن العصر الجاهلي، وتحدثت عنهن كتب التاريخ، فقد نقلت لنا كتب العرب أسماء كثيرات منهن، وبخاصة الشارعات وهو ما يُثبت أن المرأة العربية سايرت الرجل في الشعر والأدب، وجارته في الفصاحة والبيان والنقد أيضاً، وعلى ما يذكر المؤلف أن أول ما وصل غلينا من نقد المرأة للشعر ونقد أم جُندب زوجة امرئ القيس لشعتره وشعر علقمة الفحل. وذاك أن امرؤ القيس وعلقمة الفحل تنازعا الشعر، فقال علقمة لصاحبه: قج حكَمتْ بيني وبينك امرأتك أم جُندب..، أيضاً يذكر المؤلف "غناء اللهو" حيث غنت العربيات في مجالس لهوهنّ وأنسهن، وفي أعرساهن، وشأنهن من نساء العرب اللاتي امتهن المعازف فعزفن بالدفوف والطبول والصنوج والمزاهر وغيرها وكان العرب يسمّون العود كِراناً والعوّادة كِرَنية.
ويذكر المؤلف أيضاً ما رواه العرب من أخبار عن المرأة العربية وشجاعتها في الحرب. وقد رويت لنا مواقع كثيرة رافقت فيها النساء والرجال إلى ميادين القتال، حتى إذا رأين دائرة الحرب أوشكت أن تدور على قبيلتهن حَسَرن البراقع، وكشفن الشعور، وبرزَن إلى المعمعَة يستثرن حمية الرجال، ويدفعنهم إلى الدفاع عنهن، وحمايتهن من السبي وهَوانه. ويختتم الكتاب بحديث شيق عن "شهيرات الكواهن" وهذه النسوة الشهيرات اللواتي رُويت نبوءاتهن وتفسيرهن الرؤى وهن بطريفة، وهي التي أنذرت قومها بني رئام، وهم في يوم عُرس، بغارة بني ناعب وبني داهن عليهم. وهناك عفيراء الحميرية، وسلمى الهمدانية وأخريات ممن وقعت نبوءاتهن واشتهرت في هذا الباب.
