منذُ فجرِ الحضارةِ شَرَعَ الإنسانُ في نسجِ القصص، سواءٌ كانتْ تستَنِدُ إلى حكاياتٍ دينيةٍ في البداية، أو افتراضاتٍ كونية، أو أخبارٍ للملوك، يَتلاعبُ بها الخيالُ الإنسانيُّ ليجعلَ منها مع مرورِ الأيامِ أسطورةً غيرَ معلومةِ الأصل، تَتناقلُها الأجيال. في القِسْمِ الأوَّلِ من هذا الكتابِ يَختارُ المؤلِّفُ الأساطيرَ الشرقية، ليُقدِّمَها إلى القارئِ وسيلةً للتسليةِ والمُتْعة. ثُم يَشرحُ في القِسْمِ الثاني منه الصلةَ بينَ التاريخِ وكلِّ أسطورةٍ من تلكَ الأساطِير، في محاولةٍ للوصولِ إلى أصلِها الحقيقيِّ الذي انبثقتْ منه. كما قدَّمَ في نهايةِ الكتابِ مُعْجَمًا يَشرحُ فيه أسماءَ الآلهةِ واختصاصاتِهم، وأسماءَ الأبطالِ والأمكنةِ التي كانتْ مَسْرحًا للأحداث.
