يتناول هذا الكتاب ماهية الفن والجمال، وتطور مفهومهما عبر العصور، ولم يكن الفن في أي عصر مجرد متعة أو لعب، وإنما كانت له وظيفته فيا لوجود الحقيقي، كما يتعرض الكتاب للمفاهيم التي تحدد العلاقة بين المادة والصورة وبين الفن والصنعة وبين الجمال والعاطفة، ولتجربة التذوق أهميتها في إدراك الجمال، إذ أن للجمال وجه عديدة نظراً لأختلاف الأذواق عبر العصور ولاختلاف الثقافات، أما تكرار الجمال في الفن فهو يبعث على الملل وعلى الشعور بالابتذال، وذلك يفسر دأب الفنانين في البحث عن الجديد في عالم الذوق والجمال، رغبة في إعادة رؤية العالم من حولهم، ويميز الكتاب بين مفاهيم "المحاكاة" و "الواقعية" ويتوصل إلى وصف لحركة تاريخ الفن كتناوب العقل والعاطفة وبين البساطة والتعقيد، وبين النظام والتحرر، ويميز بين الفنين الكلاسيكي والباروك على أساس هذا التناوب.
أما الجمال كمعرفة حسية وذاتية فهو ما يميز الفن الرومانسي أو الانطباعي في العصر الحديث، ووراء تنوع وجوه الجمال تنوع في اهتمامات الفنانين، ودائماً كانت المحاولات تجرى للتوصل إلى أساليب فنية غير تقليدية، من أجل تجديد فعالية حواس المتذوق، ومن أجل تحرير الجمال من العادة ومن سلطة التقاليد الجامدة، إذ أن الفن والجمال يتميزان بطبيعة حرة، والمحاولات الآنية كانت من أجل تقريب المسافة بين الفن والحياة، وقد أصبح العمل الفني يفسر على أساس أنه يمثل "الجزء" الذي يكتمل بالرؤية وبالتفاعل في نظام كلي وفي حالة وجودية مكثفة، يتواصل فيها الماضي بالحاضر بطريقة ساحرة، فيحول العابر ويتجاوز الذاتي والجزئي، ليصل إلى الكلي في وجود احتفالي.
